How can I write an awesome thesis statement Writing awesome thesis statements involves knowledge and skill. It is a crucial step in learning to write high-scoring essays. To succeed, you have to know how to make a thesis statement well-structured, strong, action-oriented, and focused. Whats more, writing awesome thesis statements is a skill that takes practice to develop. Once you know what to do, you will need deliberate practice hammering out thesis after thesis, revision after revision, until the central claim of your essay says exactly what you want it to say with the structure and force you want it to have. With a well-crafted thesis statement, your essay will almost write itself. How? It will outline your essay so that all you will have to do is give examples to show what you mean. What is a thesis statement? A thesis statement is the central claim your essay makes. It summarizes everything you intend to say in your essay in one sentence. Of course, your argument will need context and further elaboration with examples to persuade your reader, but that is what the rest of the essay is for. Where can you find the thesis statement? The thesis statement almost always comes at the end of the introduction of an essay. The introduction is the name we give to the first paragraph of the essay. Introductory paragraphs perform four important jobs. They start the essay by trying capture the readers attention, give some background and context to your topic, focus your topic saying what you will and will not be talking about, and then end with the central argument you intend to develop with the rest of your essay. The introduction prepares your reader for your thesis, and if your thesis statement is well-crafted it will make your reader want to read to the end. Because of its important role as the organizing idea behind the whole essay, it is vital that you get it right every time. A loose, unfocused, unstructured, bland claim will not motivate your reader to read on. Make your thesis awesome, and your reader will devour your essay with great relish. Heres how. Structure your thesis statement with topics A good thesis statement should contain 2 or 3 three topics that can be developed in the paragraphs of the essay that follow. This formula can be represented as a claim with divisions or prongs. Below, X Y represents the claim, and because A, B, and C represent the topics you will develop with evidence in the body paragraphs of your essay. X Y because A, B, and C Take a stand with your thesis statement A good thesis should take a strong stance that can be debated and defended. In academic writing, students are often expected to make a strong claim about a controversial issue and defend it vigorously. In the example below, you can see that the first example simply offers an observation about the world. The second example raises the alarm that something must change. Make your thesis statements strong. Today, it is common to see young people spending time on social media, memes, and selfies. (WEAK) Today’s generation of young people is becoming alarmingly focused only on themselves because of the rise of social media, memes, and selfies.(STRONG) Use action verbs in your thesis statement A thesis sentence will capture the readers imagination when it conjures up action and transformation. To conjure up action in your readers mind, use action verbs rather than stative verbs. Action verbs suggest an action is being performed. In the example below the active verbs are underlined. Compare them with the stative verbs is and have in the second example which describe states of being and possession rather than actions. Romeoembodies the ideal tragic hero because hebelongs to a noble family, displays great virtue, anddiesof a tragic flaw. How to Succeed in any Math Class A challenging math class is a veritable rite of passage for students across the world. Working on problem sets late into the night can be frustrating, but most of us who have been through the gauntlet can recall moments of triumph when a particularly tricky concept is understood at last. Here at AJ, it is the mission of our mathematics departments to make our students’ first engagements with math as enjoyable and rewarding as they can be. In this article, I’ll discuss some wisdom gleaned from working with hundreds of Bay Area math students.First off, the most critical advice I can give to students is to engage actively with their homework assignments as a means of deepening conceptual understanding and preparing for successful test-taking. Students, parents, and tutors understand that assignments should be completed regularly in order to learn the material effectively. Doing so is essential, but for many students it is ultimately too shallow a level of engagement. You can read mo re about our math tutoring approach here.Students and parents often share that they feel that tests and quizzes do not reflect the difficulty or style of homework problems. Students complete the homework, feel comfortable with the problems, study diligently, yet they walk away from tests feeling blindsided. How can we address this? Here are some tips:Complete assignments regularly and on time. There is no substitute for consistent practice, though I will discuss ways to build upon it.Be aware of what topics you are responsible for knowing. This might sound obvious, but this information creates a list of goals and objectives that can guide learning and test preparation.Think actively about assignments. Teachers assign problems carefullyâ€"consider what concepts or skills were tested for each question. Create outlines to address critical thinking questions and word problems, especially harder questions. For example, you might categorize the question based on learning objectives or tec hniques that were required. Take special note of questions that combine multiple concepts.Students frequently feel that test questions are not representative of homework assignments. There are certainly times where students are tested on their problem solving ability and their improvisational skills. However, more often than not it is that the problems have been disguised or modified so that students need to think while working problems rather than relying on rote memorization. Points #3 and #4 above encourage students to apply metacognition to their learning and preparation.It can be difficult to implement points #3 and #4 in practice (especially #4). Generally, students should not attempt these tasks until they are capable of solving the associated problems without assistance.A technique that can help with point #3 is for a student to ask herself, “Why did my teacher assign these questions?” Ideally, a student can look at a homework problem and say, “This question is relevan t because. . .” This level of familiarity with questions will improve recall and allow students to work more quickly and efficiently in test scenarios.Point #4 is trickier, but ultimately once a student can comfortably solve a word problem she can begin to consider which parts of the solution are most important in the context of their current chapter or unit. Be careful not to be overly specific. The goal is not to plan solutions entirely in advance but rather to deconstruct hard problems into easier problems and to look for patterns in our solutions. This task should provide students with a foundation of problems that they can solve while allowing the flexibility to adapt to problems that look different.The student’s teacher is a great resource because teachers, knowing the exams, can indicate which topics to prioritize. The textbook is also an excellent resource as it will often have categorized questions by topic. Additionally, our tutoring team is an excellent resource becau se 1-on-1 tutoring is highly effective in demonstrating, in a customized way, how students can categorize questions or how they can develop plans of attack for tougher questions.AJ can support students and families by modeling the above behaviors in sessions. We can also help by reminding students that thoughtful engagement with practice material is a long term strategy and will take time to develop.A final piece of advice for math students new and experienced alike: learn to be comfortable even in the face of uncertainty. How to Deal With A Subpar Internship Image via Pixabay.com Luckily, I have never had this experience myself but I’ve had friends who went from excitement over their internship position to frustration in a matter of days. It can be disheartening to come to terms with unhappiness in any workplace. To address the situation, you need to first identify what exactly is bothering you. In your mind, what would need to change in order for you to thrive? Pinpointing this is the first step to solving the problem; here are four common internship problems and how to resolve them. 1. You’re confused or unsure about what to do It can be intimidating to ask for help early on in an internship. You may have internalized the notion that asking for help is a sign of weakness, or that you’ll seem incompetent if you double check with your boss about an assignment they explained to you ten minutes ago. In actuality, the opposite is much more likely to be true; your supervisors and coworkers will see you as somebody who cares about doing a stellar job at any task somebody gives you. They’ll admire your ability to admit that you didn’t understand quite how to make that complicated materials order from the office supply store, or you didn’t know how to operate the new graphic design program the company just implemented. You’ll feel much more secure in your work if you ask for help when you need it. 2. The days feel long and you feel sluggish You might not actually be bothered by the internship itself, but by how you physically feel at work. Many students take public transportation to their internships every day. This can take a toll on the body if youre having to wake up extra early to catch a bus or walk half an hour in the sun after work to get on a train. Make sure you’ve optimized the logistics: adjust your sleep schedule so that you arent yawning every three minutes at your internship. Pack a big enough lunch so that you arent starving by the time you leave, and bring plenty of snacks to munch on throughout the day. Personally, I find that snacks can actually be significant motivators to help you get through the day. After hours, make sure you are eating nutritious food so that you arrive at your internship feeling energized and hydrated. Taking care of your body can improve your general disposition, thus helping you enjoy your internship. 3. You don’t actually enjoy the job duties after all This is a common problem among college students who accept internships that they arent totally sure about from the start. Sometimes that means learning you need to steer your path in a different direction. See this opportunity to the end and reap the benefits of the transferable skills you’ll gain. If you find yourself bored, unstimulated, or uninterested in the work you’re doing alone, ask your supervisor for additional responsibilities that may be a little outside the capacity in which you were hired. If you were hired as a public relations intern at a company but you’re more interested in the legal world, ask whether you might be allowed to shadow the contracts manager or help out in any way for half an hour per day. This way, you aren’t neglecting the job duties you were hired to perform, you’re just doing more in the interest of learning about what excites you. 4. You’re being harassed by a coworker Serious matters like harassment or bullying at work definitely constitute grounds for leaving, no matter how much you might enjoy the work you’re doing. No intern should face any discrimination or mistreatment at work. Talk to your Human Resources department to see what your options are for addressing the issue at hand. You might also discuss with your supervisor or boss the experiences you’re having; nobody should tolerate harassment. You’ll find, ultimately, those negative internship experiences are opportunities to rethink, reflect, and readjust. If you can’t change your circumstances, it’s okay to leave, but try to stick it out if you can. Things do get easier over timeif you dislike feeling out of the loop or unfamiliar with how things work in the office, the best thing you can do is stay and spend time absorbing all the procedures and activities that go on. Internships truly are about growth; turn every experience into an opportunity!
